      • About the Nerthus Project

A dialogue between past and present

The Nerthus Project aims at compiling a knowledge base of Old English with Natural Language Processing. This involves the synthesis of the knowledge generated by a long tradition of philological studies and its reinterpretation by means of up-to-date linguistic methods that revolve around the computational parsing of natural language data.

        Research in Corpus Linguistics

The Nerthus Project analyses the phenomena of real language through large collections of Old English texts. A set of interconnected relational databases gives rise to the Knowledge Base of Old English, which automatically tags and annotates sections of the corpus and can be searched online.

A project in Digital Humanities and the Semantic Web

The Nerthus Project applies the advances of Digital Humanities to the analysis, storage and dissemination of linguistic heritage as represented by Old English. It also contributes to the development of the next generation of the Internet, which is, among other things, geared to the compilation of lexical databases and the 3D representation of web contents.

        Open access results

The Nerthus Project makes its main findings available online as open access databases and documents, thus taking part in the extension of the Web of data. By means of links to other projects of the discipline, the project disseminates meaningful structured information on the language of the Anglo-Saxons.
